School Visits
Overall purpose: To get kids to:
1. Relax and sketch, not worrying about a “pretty or cool finished drawing”
2. Think of an idea before drawing
3. Draw it with me
4. Realize that good drawings take many sketches and revisions to achieve a nice illustration.
Books
1. Read Anything Good Lately?- age group: pre-k to1rst grade
2. Written Anything Good Lately? – age group: pre-k to 2nd grade
3. Used Any Numbers Lately? – age group: pre-k to 1rst grade
4. It’s A Beautiful Day! – age group: pre-k to kindergarten
Content of talks
1. Read book 1rst -15 minutes
2. Show artwork for book- 15 minutes - from sketches to finish art, including many revisions.
3. Draw together- for ˝ hour. We will think of a new idea related to the chosen book, and draw the idea together. The children will see how I think, how they come up with many great ideas, and on the first sketch, we will see together that the drawing is “on its way”, but NOT a finished drawing.
I’ve sometimes noticed that kids may not think that they are good at drawing, if their first try is not the way they envisioned it. This little workshop shows them that even a professional illustrator rarely gets what becomes a finished piece of art on the first sketch. Drawing is a lot like any other pursuit, in that it takes a lot of practice.
We have a lot of fun thinking of what to draw, (relating to the book I’m using) and drawing together. They can hear my thoughts as I draw, because I speak my thoughts out loud. Mostly all of the children I’ve given this workshop to are so excited to show me their sketch at the end of the workshop. They then have a nice sketch, to show their parents that evening.
